Our day at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta was both exciting and disappointing. We arrived at the field where over 550 hot-air balloons were slated to ascend en-masse between 8 and 9 AM. We were expecting to see the "Dawn Patrol" first, followed by the mass ascension afterwards. It was very exciting watching all the balloons "stand up" as they were inflated from very neatly folded and compact packages on the ground. It was thrilling to stand among hundreds of fully inflated balloons ready to rise. And the colors! Unfortunately, it was not to be. High winds aloft made it unsafe to fly that day, the second-last day of the 2021 Fiesta. We returned later in the day for the "Glow" - when the balloons would be lit up after dark for another fantastic colorful spectacle. Again, due to windy conditions, the show had to be cancelled. This image shows a segment of one of the balloons laying on the ground, compactly folded in a narrow strip of about 3 feet wide and dozens of feet long. As warm air is blown into the bottom opening of the balloon, the folded material expands and opens up, and the balloon begins to literally stand up...
