Deadwood, South Dakota is famous for gold, gambling and gunslingers - Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane being the most famous of the latter. But on the day we toured the town, it was taken over by Mustangs, but not the equine type… We noticed them initially when we were waiting to cross the main street at a cross-wak - we wondered why a parade of beautiful vintage Ford Mustangs was passing by - there were dozens of them with their pristine paint jobs gleaming and their engines growling. When we reached our tour rendezvous point, we saw what was happening. The Mustangs weren’t passing through - they were there to show off. It would not be an exaggeration to say that this image is the result of my subjects driving up and parking right in front of me. A note about the title: besides being inspired by the great hit song by Wilson Pickett, it also aptly describes our initial sighting of the cars as they “sallied forth” from one end of town to their parking spots in the center of the city.
